Vijay Thapa

Vijay Thapa was born on the 2nd of January 1953 A.D. at Ramnagar 2, Nawalparasi. He did his B.F.A. from Banaras University and also achieved B.A. in culture from T. U. He has 17 solo exhibitions and numerous group shows to his credit in Nepal and abroad. He is the former Academician of Nepal Association of Fine Arts and also was the Assembly Member at Nepal Academy of Fine Arts. He won various awards and honors from various organizations for his tireless contribution in the Nepali art field. Furthermore, he was the chief editor for various art related magazines such as Akriti and Kalakar.

Since he belongs to the first generation of modern artists in Nepal, when he started as a painter, the conceptual and thematic exploration in painting was very new here. He is amongst the first artists to introduce the narratives of difficulties of the people outside of the valley. However, his pieces are not completely realistic in appearance as they are frequently embellished with flat colors in the background with recognizable human figures that of male and female on the front. This is how he also adds a flavor of budding romance in his artworks. As a result, his paintings subtly convey a story of life that gradually unfolds in the realm of uncertainty. However, since he frequently applies warm colors, one also gets a suggestion of positive will power and hope in his works.
